'Euphoria' Almost Killed Off A Main Character In Season 1

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of Euphoria. As we all know, being the “the hottest, most confident, bad b--h version” of ourselves definitely does not include not ruining the twists and turns of our favorite dress-code-less high school series by ignoring these warnings.

After nearly three years, two specials (one of which was apparently written in lieu of a psych ward stay), and a movement in which almost every woman over the age of 20 (myself admittedly included) did their damndest to pull off eye gems and low-rise cutout yoga pants like TV high schoolers despite being well out of high school, HBO's Euphoria finally returned for its long-awaited second season on Sunday night.

An episode best described as “stressful” and “what the actual f--k did I just watch,” the show's season 2 premiere started with a bang (or, well glassy crash) leaving us with far more questions than answers. Is East Highland High School's resident football star/conniving a-hole Nate okay after Fezco, Rue's loveable drug dealer/proverbial big brother gave him the ass-whooping we all wished he'd gotten in season one? What's next for Rue and Jules's on-and-off relationship with her New Year's Eve relapse? Will Maddy get a UTI after wiping with a communal bathroom hand towel at a high school party?

Yet as all these questions loom overhead, ones that will hopefully be explored in the episodes to come (well, maybe minus that last one) it seems this Fez-centric installment almost looked a hell of a lot different – namely because its starring character was originally supposed to be dead.

“I was supposed to die in season 1, bro,” Angus Cloud, the actor behind Fez, recently told GQ's Frazier Tharpe when asked if Euphoria creator Sam Levinson reassured him that his character would eventually get a backstory episode. Although Cloud, whose appearance on the series marks his acting debut, maintained that Fez's proposed death was not “cap," he says he wasn't always sure exactly how or when it was supposed to go down.

"Apparently, because they cast me off the street, I guess the character of Fezco was <never meant to stick around>" Cloud explained. “I don't even know how. I never saw that script. No one ever told me,” he continued. That was until his castmate Jacob Elordi, who plays Nate, clued him into the original plot of Euphoria's first episode. “It was one day when we were filming the pilot that I think Jacob told me, he was like,  'Oh yeah, you didn't know? Your character gets <imitates brains getting blown out>.' And yeah, it never ended up happening."

So why, exactly, was his character spared from what probably would have been a dramatic – but aesthetic as hell – fate? “I think that they liked what I did and so they decided to keep me alive and let me rock,” Cloud said. "I don't know how I was going out, but hopefully I would've gone out like a G."

And “gone out like a G” he sure would have.
